5 Ways to Use Raw Honey Beyond Your Tea
Raw honey is easy to think of as just a tea sweetener, but it’s worth far more space in the kitchen than that. Here are five simple ways to use it that go beyond stirring it into a cup of tea.
1. On toast, but layer it properly
Instead of drizzling honey straight onto plain toast, try it over a thin layer of butter or nut butter first. The fat carries the honey’s flavour better and stops it from soaking straight into the bread.
2. In salad dressings
A small spoon of honey balances out the sharpness of vinegar or lemon juice in a homemade dressing. Whisk it with olive oil, a acidic ingredient of your choice, and a pinch of mustard for a simple dressing that works on most green salads.
3. In marinades
Honey helps a marinade caramelise slightly when cooked, giving a better colour and a rounder flavour to grilled or roasted vegetables and meat. A darker honey, like our Raw Wild African Forest Honey, works particularly well here, since its stronger flavour holds up against other marinade ingredients like garlic and soy.
4. Stirred into porridge or yoghurt
A milder honey, like our Pure Raw Acacia Honey, works well here because it won’t overpower the other flavours in a bowl of porridge or plain yoghurt.
5. In baking
Honey can often replace some or all of the sugar in a baking recipe, adding moisture as well as sweetness. Because honey is sweeter than sugar by volume, you generally need slightly less of it, and baking times may need a small adjustment. A stronger honey, like forest honey, tends to come through more clearly in baked goods than a milder one.
